Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the JA Fitness newsletter.
No matter what your holiday plans, I’m sure everyone is a little concerned about trying to get into last year’s shorts.
I know that I nag about healthy eating and exercise but, from my experience, people will only make a change if it fits into their lifestyle and is not too intrusive.
Not everyone can, or wants to, go for a power walk or a jog so I thought you might be interested in the amount of calories that other activities burn.
| Activity: | Calories in |
| Sleeping | 90 |
| Sitting | 85 |
| Sitting & typing, writing etc | 110 |
| Ironing | 150/200 |
| General housework | 250 |
| Food Shopping | 250 |
| Swimming (leisure) | 280 |
| Tennis (doubles) | 310 |
| Golf (carrying clubs) | 320 |
| General gardening | 350 |
| Walking (4mph) | 350 |
| Digging in the gardening | 500 |
| Swimming (racing) | 520 |
| Aerobics | 550 |
| Jogging (6mph) | 650 |
Remember that these are for a continual hour, so 15 minutes housework and a 45 minute tea break don’t count!
The level for the exercise to be effective as a calorie burner is when you feel warm and that you are working hard, but you are comfortable, and feel that you could carry on for longer. If you feel an activity is too hard for your body to take it will be using different chemicals which will be of no benefit, so you just need to lower the intensity slightly.
As always, have water with you during the activity and if you have any problems please contact me.
