Hello, I hope you are enjoying the summer sunshine.  As the weather is getting warmer I thought it was a good time to return to the subject of drinking more water.

Why not use the month of July as a trial?  Gradually substitute your usual drink for a glass of water through the day.  You don’t need to start by drinking the recommended two litres, build it up.  You may find that you have to visit the toilet more than usual, but stick with it and your body will learn to regulate itself.

Still water is the only thing that will have the beneficial hydrating effect.  You can add squash or fruit juice to improve the flavour, but not bubbles, caffeine or alcohol.  Hot water is acceptable and could substitute for a tea or coffee.

Tap water is not always as pure as it should be, but don’t spend lots of money on bottled water.  I have a water filter jug which I keep topped up and it is a much cheaper option, try adding some ice if you prefer your drinks really cold.

If you are trying to lose some weight water is very helpful.  The brain makes you think you are hungry, when you may in fact be thirsty.  When you feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water first.

When you are exercising you should always keep some water with you, even if you are going for a walk or taking part in a Pilates class.  As you exercise you will use up vital fluids in your body and these need to be replaced.

I know that this will take a great deal of willpower so build up gradually, until you find you naturally sip water throughout the day.  By the end of a month this should come naturally and the benefits will be enormous:

The general rule is that if your urine smells yeasty and is dark in colour you are dehydrated.   Your urine should be relatively colourless and odour free.

This is a good time to keep a note of how you feel at the start of the trial, at the end of each week and then at the end of the month.  In which ways do you feel a benefit and has anyone passed comment on your change in appearance or mood?

As always, you are welcome to ask for advice or share your experiences with me and I hope you enjoy the summer.

Best Wishes
